entering the new century, dongyue carried out the ptfe (a high-tech product) project that became the focus of the industry.
in the mid of november 2000, the industry association held the 10th five-year development planning seminar in hangzhou. ceo liu chuanqi attended the conference, and told everyone that dongyue would implement a 3000-ton ptfe project soon.
at that time, the biggest installation with technology in china was only 1000 tons, yet a township enterprise was about to carry out a 3000-ton project, which most people regarded as a joke. one peer enterprise asked ceo liu, ‘no matter whether you can successfully carry out the 3000-ton ptfe project or not, who will you sell it to?’
actually, company managers had seek advice from several experts before this seminar, and they all gave the same reply ‘no’. when the boss of one enterprise learned that dongyue planed to carry out a 3000-ton ptfe project, he laughed and said, ‘if dongyue can carry out the 3000-ton ptfe project, i can produce the atomic bomb.’ and experts gave more honest advice. former chief secretary of the organic fluoride industry, and head of experts ren chengwei said. ‘you’d better focus on producing refrigerants. the risk of carrying out the ptfe project is too high, since you do not have the techniques and the market.’ three visits from chief engineer yu xiuyuan made ren chengwei see dongyue’s determination and attitude in implementing this project, and he seriously asked, ‘ you really want to do this?’ yu xiuyuan answered decisively, ‘ we really want to do this.’ ren chengwei listed all the difficulties that the project might bring, which gave dongyue very concrete directions.
on april 26th 2002, dongyue put the 3000-ton ptfe project into practice.
lots of people started to question, ‘dongyue could sell some products to expand its market and to promote its brand. but how can they make the 3000-ton project work?’
in order to be puservasive, the company decided to hold a ptfe products promotion meeting, and used the on-site atmosphere, the data and the products to prove it.
in november 2002, dongyue ptfe promotion meeting was held in dongyue, and those more than 120 participants included members from the industry association, leaders and experts form universities in beijing, 80% of domestic ptfe-processing customers, and businessmen from janpan, korea and india. although zhang jianhong had a high fever almost 40-celsius degree, he accompanied the clients to visit the factory and to introduce it all by himself through the whole journey. and his twenty-minute speech was full of personality and passion, which deeply impressed every one at the meeting and gained lots of applauds. an india client volunteered to make a speech, and he said sincerely, ‘i have been to lots of famous companies worldwide, like dupont, daikin. i dare say that dongyue is as better as any of them. more importantly, dongyue has a most dedicated, sincere and passionate leader, and it is an honor to cooperate with an enterprise like this.’ a client form the south part of china trotted to the front, passed a cigarette to zhang jianhong, and said, ‘ i will order 500 ton product next year because of you.’
after the meeting, ren chenwei excitedly said to president zhang, ‘the hope of china’s ptfe lies in dongyue.’
since then, dongyue, as an uprising star in ptfe, has swiftly occupied the domestic and abroad markets, and has become the largest ptfe-producing base in the world.
